Scripps Spelling Bee

Tonight Mowgli participated in the Scripps Junior Spelling Bee.

Mowgli is a young 1st grader as has a summer birthday.  He competed against other 1st graders and 2nd graders and he finished in 5th place.

We are so proud of him!

He absolutely loved participating and said he can't wait till next year.  He also said next year he wants all of his cousins and grandparents there.  That might be kind of hard to swing, since one of the cousins he said he wants there lives in Kansas City, Missouri!

The top three finalists received medals.  All participants received a "goodie bag" with organic suckers, stickers, pencils, erasers, free coupons for activities around town and an orange.  Mowgli was most excited about the orange.

This was a great first experience for us.  It helped me know how to better prepare him for next year. The finalists ended up on 5th grade level words before a winner was finally determined.  There were two second grade girls that went for about 30 minutes before one of them made a mistake.  They were impressive!

Mowgli got out on the word "otherwise."

We had never practiced that word.  I was hoping he would realize it was a compound word and break it up, but he didn't.  However, as soon as we got in the car and there weren't people and judges staring at him, he spelled it perfectly.  :)

What a kid.
